Walk

Walk

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10

I have this verse pinned smack dab in the middle of the bulletin board next to me. I memorized it as a kid, but struggle to keep all the phrases in order today. Old age plus *gestures wildly at everything everywhere.*

Here’s why I love it, and why I keep trying to memorize it.

First, workmanship. This isn’t your kid’s pottery project. This is the life work of a master artist. “The Greek word Paul chose for this sentence is “poiema,” and what he had in mind is a work of masterful creativity.” – Jon Bloom

We are God’s lifework, a creation made of skill, art, beauty, life. God don’t make no junk, indeed.

Next, we were created in Christ Jesus for good works. We were not created to watch Breaking Bad for the third time, she preaches to herself. We were created for good works. We aren’t here just for us. We were created to apply justice to the broken systems, to save lives in big and small ways, to bring creativty to everything, everywhere. We were created to help.

We were created for these things in Christ Jesus. We were not created to be alone. We have Christ in us. We don’t have to save the world by ourselves. We have the power of God within us, surrounding us, saving us. As we go do these good works, we know we do not have to do them alone.

“… which God prepared beforehand.” As we are saving our corner of the world, we are not alone. We are not working in a vacuum. We are stepping onto the path God knew we needed. The way is prepared. Everything is ready.

“… that we should walk in them.” We are taking a step. We are taking the next step. We are taking the step after that. We don’t have to guess. We don’t have to worry.

Simply, walk.
